Catering for your wedding reception
Although this isn’t top of the list of priorities for your wedding day, choosing the right food can often help to make your wedding reception as special as the ceremony – not just for you, but for your family and guests. After all, the last thing you want is a case of food poisoning for your guests or – even worse – for you on your honeymoon!
The style of the food will depend on your budget. If money is not a problem then a full three course sit-down meal is an option; whereas a simple buffet can be just as effective if you are planning your wedding on a budget and wish to spend the money on other aspects of your wedding day.
Also dependent on your budget will be the use of a caterer. There are great advantages to hiring a caterer; for instance, you take away all the stress and hassle of organising the food arrangements yourself. With the services of a caterer you will merely sit down and discuss which food you would like to be served and usually a cost per person. But you will pay much more for their services. Even more so if they need to rent equipment to use on the day, such as portable cookers and fridges, because the venue you’ve chosen isn’t equipped with them.
You may decide that you can get family or friends to organise a buffet. This will work out a lot cheaper because you will most likely just have the costs of the food itself. If you choose this option you must be careful that the people who are organising the food have regard to the hygiene and safe storage of food.
In terms of which drinks to serve, you may have various options related to the venue that you choose. Some venues may have their own fully equipped bars which can be used as either a conventional cash bar or an open bar where you pay for all the drinks. The use of this bar will increase the amount you pay for the venue, as the staff will have to be paid.
As for the wedding cake, there are many specialist catering firms who can design the cake according to the number of guests and the number of tiers you wish to have. If you are hiring a caterer for your wedding, the chances are that they will either do this service themselves or recommend another company whom you can contact for the design of your wedding cake.
